GMX.COM - Is this a reliable service?

I was wondering if it is worth creating an account with them, and exactly how relable they are. No point in creating an account if within one year it will be gone for good lol... Please help me decide.

Create an account and then check the forums at GMX.

Lots of unhappy folks posting.

I don't think anyone can guarantee you with anything like absolute certainty that any service will be around a year from now, not even the "giants" like Hotmail and Gmail. But I know that the German gmx.net service, owned by the same company, has been around for quite a few years now and seems to have a fairly good reputation for reliability, based on most discussions of it I've read in these forums.

I haven't personally rigorously tested gmx.com for reliability, but I haven't thus far noticed any problems in my own very limited use/testing of it. While I haven't used its POP or IMAP access to download messages locally, I do regularly poll my gmx.com account by POP3 from Gmail and haven't noticed any problems with that thus far. Opinions seem to vary quite a bit on the webmail, however, with some, such as myself, finding it much too slow to be of much usefulness, while others seem to have little problem with that, perhaps depending on one's connection, geographical location and other factors. So you may only be able to judge that for yourself.

As it is currently in Beta, I believe they're intending to add further features eventually, although it seems rather limited feature-wise at this point to me. But as one who tends to at least look at almost any new service that may have any eventual "potential" at all, I figured it was at least worth acquiring a good user name while the service was still new, for any possible future value the account may have. Of course, as with the other factors, you might only be able to judge for yourself whether it's features (including web, POP3, and IMAP access) may be sufficient for your purposes.

Otherwise, there are at least a couple of somewhat lengthy threads here discussing the service which it shouldn't be difficult to turn up in a search so as to read a variety of opinions of the service already expressed by a number of members of these forums.

You could have linked to that forum. Not easy to find it
for us who are not used to navigate their very crowded
homepage.

http://www.gmx.net/

Cause on www.gmx.com there I see nothing about a forum in English.

Are you referring to a forum in German? Google found nothing.

gmx.com forum

My mail-eu.gmx.com has error just now so that could be one of the problems they complain about. I ahve not logged in for weeks.

Only used pop3 and no problems there.

Here is error message

I don't remember any customer number. Do all of you have such one?

I did enter correct email address and correct password but no log in in Firefox. I try Ms IE now. That failed too.

Yes we have such numbers but the emailaddress is supposed to work.

Is this what they write about in the forum?

Thank you guys. I did register for an account because my first name was available. But it seems to be totally crap at the moment because I cannot access it at all. May be the server is down. I suppose its in Beta so I should give it a chance.

Thanks Mysterious. Set up the pop so you could use it anyway. ???

Yes but why not link to the forum then so we could read and write there.

Do our other threads have that link? Maybe an old gmx.net thread?
Could a Moderator help us find it?
http://gmxhelp.com/forums/list.page

You need java activated in FF.

The number allowed me to log in and there they maybe explain why the address didn't work.

The say me have not changed password the last two month and they suggest such changes are important.

Hmm could that be why they want us to use the number instead of email addy?

Or is this totally unrelated.

Could those who don'tget in test the number?

Remember to shut down the browser first so it has a fresh sign in?

If the email address fails just put in your number and don't do anything in the password and if yoru lucky that will do it?

Could someone having a gmx.net write to the support and ask them to answer the question about log in trouble.

I'm not sure, but the best I can recall from the last time I was there, sometime within the last week or so, I think it may only be possible to access the forum from the webmail interface while logged in to one's account, which even then requires creation of a unique forum user name before it will grant access to the forum index for the first time. So unless I'm mistaken, there wouldn't be much point in posting a link here, as it didn't appear to me that the forum was "publicly" viewable anyway.

.
I don't have any answer offhand as to why some people have problems logging in, but as far as the password "notice", I recall that the gmx.net webmail has long periodically warned me about my password not having been changed, with the advice that I do so, but I don't think I've ever changed the password since the time I first opened the account several years ago, and I've never had any problems associated with that that I've noticed, other than seeing that annoying reminder when I log in.

So AFAIK that's just a "courtesy warning" and ignoring it won't have any particular consequences. There may be an option somewhere to disable it, but I'm not at all sure of that, never having noticed it as far as I can recall.

Yes could be something they just give us automatically totally unrelated.

But the number made it for me. Could those who failed try to use their number instead so we know it if was only a glitch this time or if it does help others too?

I use the pop all day so me not needing the webinterface only to log in to keep acount and that is some 6 month maybe? Or do they have 30 days? I've forgot?

I've never seen a link to the forums anywhere but from within my account, and since I seemed to have to be signed in to reach it, I assumed that was necessary. But you're right, I am able to reach it directly from your link. Although that seems to be a link to a particular post, not to the forum index page. When I follow your link, and then follow the link to the forum index, I get a URL in the address bar which includes a session ID number, but the following "base" URL, with the ID number removed, may work as a direct link to the forum index page.

If you're referring to the "inactivity period", as best I can recall that's stated in the FAQ (or somewhere) as 6 months, and AFAIK either web or POP/IMAP access is sufficient to keep the account "active."
