.exe attachments rejected

Someone sent me an .exe attachment (software) to my Gmail account and he got this answer:

---------------------------------------------------------------------
The original message was received at Tue, 18 Oct 2005 09:51:20 -0500
from localhost [127.0.0.1]

----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -----
<******@gmail.com>
(reason: 552 5.7.0 Illegal Attachment 28si7940465wrl)

----- Transcript of session follows -----
.... while talking to gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com.:
>>> DATA
<<< 552 5.7.0 Illegal Attachment 28si7940465wrl
554 5.0.0 Service unavailable
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Is Gmail not accepting .exe attachments? I know they maybe dangerous but all .exe are not viruses.

Hi, "bona tarda"

In fact, GMail never have accepted .exe (or extensions that may be considered as programs) as attachment. The reason is to avoid viruses and, it seems, stop sharing of illegal programs.

But there is always one solution: zip your file, encript it (using WinZip, 7-Zip or any other similar utility) and send it. If GMail rejects it again, try changing the extension to some other (for example, ".abc").

Gmail does look inside zipped files to check for the .exe extension. So, changing the extension is the way to go.

Gmail does not accept these types of files, even if they are sent in a zipped (.zip, .tar, .tgz, .taz, .z, .gz) format. Any message of this type sent to your Gmail account will be bounced back to the sender.

Unhappy Got an email to use it

The reason why I got an email is so that I could receive and send stuff, if I am going to use an external service like the suggested yousendit to email then I dont really need Gmail at all.

The rar choice or changing the extension may work but all this wastes time, I believe that Gmail should have somewhere in the options where you can disable this at your own risk, I don't really need a nanny.

In addition to failing to receive at least a couple of important "simple" email messages, that is, without any attachments at all, at my gmail address, when I made the stupid mistake of giving my gmail address (almost unbelievably, still in "beta" after over a year and a half now -- will they ever get it right???) for a business transaction a few months ago, I've more recently found the service to be extremely unreliable, to the point of being virtually useless, for sending or receiving any kind of attachments, with the possible exception of simple pictures (.jpegs and .gifs) -- such as trying to send/receive "common" .rm or .wmv files, for example, which as far as I know aren't particularly "high risk" types of files. Which is why I could never even remotely consider ever using gmail as my "primary" service, at least not until their system's reliability may be vastly improved from what it appears to be at this point in my experience. Truly, I trust even hotmail more than I do gmail, and yahoo much more.

Thank you for the tip, I find pointless having 2.5GB if people can't send me software as for .jpg and .gif and .txt any usual email provider will give me enough space, I will definetly be considering inbox.com.

Yeah, I could rar, encrypt, zip or etc...What do I do? I tell all my friends do not send me .exe to Gmail go and rar it first?

I think I prefer giving them an alternative email that accepts it, if one can do it, so should the others
