I see it with my dad. Anytime he upgrades any software, his comment to me is "It's all totally different" and he's always slightly confused and agitated for a few weeks, even if the changes are minor. He's a pure creature of habit however. I've had him ring me saying "This new window appeared that says 'Do you want to XXX?' with a Yes and a No button. What do I do?" To which I just reply, "well do you want to do XXX?" "Well yes, I do" "Then click 'Yes'" "Ok, thanks, bye"
I can see your point - same with my parents..

Maybe small incremental change to the beta server or on the "advanced screen" and a larger release on the "basic screens" is best?

Well, I like the changes that FM has made but, this put's me in a quite a fix. I have 4 domains at Tuffmail and I've gotten to like it there. And I do have a Enhanced account at FM(I had it before Tuffmail) but I rarely use it anymore. I might move two them to FM in the future. Oh well, what to do? Decisions, decisions, decisions!

Like you, I have a couple of domains hosted by Tuffmail. I had one hosted with Fastmail. As a result of the changes, I added two other domains to my FM Enhanced account, so now all my 5 email domains are split between the two.
I intend to keep it that way, as like in investments, diversification reduces my risks.

I only have 1 domain, but that limit of 5 or whatever it was for virtual aliases... that was crazy. I took my MX elsewhere.

I actually don't have a ton of aliases, so I ended up forwarding with my registrar, so switching is less painful.

I'll probably bring it back to FastMail, I do like the whole sub-folder and plus addressing using my own domain.

The recent lack of improvements in FM, particularly wrt global search and priority labels, caused me to rethink the idea that the ideal situation is to have only one email account. Now I run Gmail in parallel with FM, and use each for what each is good for. Works fine for me. And takes a lot of pressure off both sets of developers.

Wow, exactly the same with my mom. She's stuck using AOL email though. I finally got her to switch to using Thunderbird (since AOL offers IMAP) at least instead of going through AOL's incredibly unintuitive email interface.

I'll switch her to Fastmail eventually, just waiting on family accounts and the ability to check external IMAP (or poll AOL, whichever comes first). I've given her a forwarding address, but AOL doesn't allow sending email with a different FROM email, so she can't gradually switch to her new address yet either, what a pain.

She's liking Thunderbird though, which is good. She saw me using it and asked about why my email looks so nice and easy to use (which is huge for her, since anything technical is not her thing). She even asked about my email when I logged onto Fastmail's web interface to check email. She definitely wants to switch to Fastmail because of the mailbox size, but can't leave her aol.com addy cold turkey.
Slightly OT, but I couldn't pass up replying to this.

I'll be 55 next week & 10 years ago I thought I was *too* old to even learn how to use a computer, much less eventually learn things that some other folks still don't know how to do.
My uncle set me up, and just so happened it was with AOL. Once I became a little comfortable online, it wasn't just my AOL email I didn't want to give up, but their layout. Because that was what I learned on, it was comfortable to me, like an old pair of shoes. And I felt the learning curve was too steep on other ISP's. (I even laugh at my own thinking of that now! )

You might want to tell your mom, *if* it's available in your area, "wmconnect" ISP is almost identical to AOL. Actually, it's a part of AOL, having the same dial up #'s, basically the same layout, etc. Only at a much less cost. I started out at $9.94, and now I'm at $7.94 a month, unlimited access. You can pick up a CD at any Wal-Mart store, or download it from online. So when I first switched from AOL, there was nothing new for me to learn.

Then tell your mom that if I could learn my way around FastMail, getting the bare basic's down in only a short time, then anyone can. (And I'm not joking). I'm totally self-taught on computer, along with help from friends, then a bit later, help from eBay Q&A Board, and now all the help I'll *ever* need on these forums.

Then, if that isn't enough, tell her the little ole middle aged lady that I am, (slightly a bit older than just "middle age" *groan!!),,,I have learned SO much more with FM than I ever dreamed possible. I'm now an "FMaholic". Literally going into DT's if I happen to have a nightmare that the company folds under in the next 10-15 years.

I've learned little by little, step by step, at my own pace. (Which is the way I prefer to learn). By asking questions here, just reading other posts & learning from those, (these forums have a wealth of information!), and then learning some by trial & error, just playing around with my full account.

I still use wmconnect as my ISP to connect online, but the only time I check email there, is to delete all the spam! And I now use FireFox browser, which I dearly love. (Haven't yet graduated to Thunderbird, mainly because I've not had the time to devote to it.)

Since joining FM, I've never looked back, and most definitely *never* regretted it. And trust me, I was kinda, (OK--a LOT), pc illiterate & still am. Many things I see on the forums are totally "geek greek" to me. But I even surprised myself by learning a tad of sieve code, just by looking at what had been auto generated. I may not understand the language, but figured it out enough to get it to do what I wanted.

So tell your mom to "go for it". She can keep her AOL addy until she feels a bit more comfortable with FM. But once she learns the basic's, she'll kick herself for waiting so long to switch over.

Yeah, before the upgrade, I had purchased a few extra aliases and pointed the domains to Fastmail, but now, now I have 43 domains who's MX point direct to Fastmail, but Im sure I will run into the 50 limit soon, then what?

Genuinely curious, and not being a smart-aleck about it: what do you use 43 domains for?

One of two things will happen:

Either FM will increase you quota (they seem to be flexible), or you will have to go on a domain hosting diet...

Various things.

A few are my own vanity domains, (jasonward.info, jasonward.eu, jasonward.me.uk etc)

A few are related to some business I've either run in the past or have ideas about for the future (nplus.co.uk, nirocomputers.co.uk, minibrothels.net etc)

A few I've bought and are holding for freinds and family (helenshandiwork.com, ruthryan.co.uk, kerrydunn.me.uk, idophotos.co.uk etc)

Some I just like and may have use for at a later stage (youcanemail.me.uk, causing.info, treebeard.eu etc)

A few relate to my participation in Landmark Education training programs and I have used them for various reasons in the past (tmlp.info, teamlondon.net, teamgame.info, powertocreate.info)

Finally there is one related to where I used to live and a community group that used to run there (southcity.info).

That's it, but mostly the reason I have so many domains is because I natuarally horde things plus I'm a techy who likes to play, which is why I write seive scripts, use services like dyndns.com and have two hosting accounts, one in the US another here in the UK (1and1.co.uk) but appart from the amusement I get from them they do very little for anybody else, and if you bother to check my domains I've listed you'll there is little to no content.

So mostly the answer to your question is, they are toys.

Jason

I don't have as many as you, but I'm not far behind. Nevertheless, I don't plan on hosting more than a handful at FM.

PS: I used to be that way with email addresses, but then I got rid most of them. Now I've moved on to domains...which of course, means almost unlimted email address. I need help.....

Just to be clear, I dont host any of my domains with Fastmail, I just point my MX records to Fastmail.

As for needing help... Yeah, I totally agree, I need help
