Yahoo raises cost of domains
Hey guys,
I just received an email from Yahoo saying that the cost for my personal domain was going up to 34.95 usd. I got the domain in 2005 and paid 4.95 usd and renewed in 2006 and 2007 for 9.95 usd. I decided to cancel this domain as I cannot afford this increase. I have another domain with Yahoo and I suppose it will jump to this same price and I will cancel it also. Thankfully, I don't use these domains too much and it will not hurt too bad to cancel them. Just thought I would post this to see if anyone else noticed this price increase. Later, John |

Are you sure?? Seems very excessive. Why don't you transfer the domain to Namecheap.com for less than $10 a year?

Yahoo offers new domains for $9.95/year, so $34.95 is way OTT.... Are you sure the latter price does not include some 'extras', like web hosting?

Here is part of the email from Yahoo.
Important note: Beginning on July 1, 2008, Yahoo!'s annual domain renewal price increases to $34.95 per year. I have two domains through Yahoo and nothing extra that I'm aware of. As I said, I cancelled the one domain and my remaining domain shows a renewal price of 12.95 usd. I expect to get another email from Yahoo real soon indicating that this price will also increase to 34.95 usd. as per this info that was also in the email from Yahoo: Please note that the billing center will not reflect the new $34.95 domain-renewal price until July 1. Until that time, you will continue to see the old renewal price next to your plan.) I sure don't understand this huge increase. Unless I'm missing something here. John |

Ok, all I can say is that yahoo is not the only registrar to substantially increase the domain price after some initial promotional period. I got stung by that trick earlier this year (by a company which deserves remaining nameless) and decided not to renew with them.

Faint, I bought a dozen domains from Yahoo, most with 9.95 USD per year.
Maybe I will give up them? |

Can't people just transfer those domains to other registrars?

$34.95 per year?
![]() That is OBSCENE! I only pay $9.95 and that includes domain proxy for privacy. Yahoo is evil, personally I've boycotted them for a few years because of their practices. But this really takes the cake, time to move on you know ![]() |

Just one point: curvefan, is your domain in a 'common' TLD (.com, .net, .org &c)? There some more exotic and expensive TLDs, where $34.95 per year would be a bargain...

Bingo....
I'd move over to www.Godaddy.com, www.1and1.com, or www.name.com . Sounds like yahoo wants to get out of the domain business but make it profitable for the few people who decide to stay. Actually, I'd guess many people with a domain at yahoo would stay. lol... At any rate, you can transfer the domain 5 to 10 days before the domain is to expire at yahoo (I can't remember the exact amount of time and don't feel like looking it up right now). |
