However for registered members Pobox works flawlessly

Not accepting new (paying) customers for weeks doesn't sound like a great business decision. There's always customer churn. Increasing expenses. It takes energy to power servers. Energy prices are quite high now.You need to upgrade or replace hardware. If it's truly been weeks then why? This isn't a big fortune 500 corporation with huge cash reserves. They point people to signup for Fastmail instead. Is it possible they might sell off Popbox? I don't know.

It's more likely that they are merging infrastructure.

If that' it, then why not let potential and current customers know that is the case?

Closing new signup's for weeks without any explanation just isn't a good look and doesn't inspire confidence.

Frankly, I'm surprised they haven't abandoned the POBox.com product and just gone with Fastmail long before this. Nothing wrong at all with POBox, but I can't imagine maintaining two very similar but slightly different services is efficient or cost-effective, and Fastmail seems to be the much bigger brand. Fastmail is probably better branding for sales too. Plus, I wouldn't be surprised to see them close down the smaller Philadelphia office, unless maybe they keep it open for North American customer service, which I imagine is the largest customer base. It is a pain for Australians to have to be up in the middle of the night to help those in North America.

For the last 23 years I use myusername@pobox.com as my main emailaddress.
So this is not so simple...

This additional information was found over on Twitter on Jan 30:

We are currently working on improving internal Pobox systems and during this time, we are unable to accept new sign-ups.

We do not have an estimated time that we can provide at this time.

I can't imagine they will eliminate the use of pobox.com addresses even if they transition everyone to Fastmail. They would just become another one of the available Fastmail.com domains you can have addresses at. https://www.fastmail.com/about/ourdomains/

I have a Pobox MailStore account and get 50GB storage space (which I need...)
Fastmail charge exactly the same price for 25GB only.

So, they haven't been taking new signups in over a month. What does it mean?

Yes just like Hushmail suddently taking the mobile interface away WITH NO WARNING leaving me w/no email!! (This was several years ago)

They told me "Any modern browser can use the desktop interface" well that didnt help me being on IE6 (MyIE2 in running)

They are a canadian company and I didnt think anyone but ppl in the USA did such stupid stuff but I was wrong.......

Most people dont care about anyone.... If it doesnt work for you, they dont give a rats tail and its really very sad.......

Pobox.com is secretly removing features.

Quote:
Thank you for reaching out. We understand that losing a feature you've come to rely on is disappointing and while that was not our aim Pobox’s URL redirection service is almost unused outside of a few users. We've opted to retire it for upcoming interface changes.
