@aolmail on Twitter:

Is the WiFi you pay for, say at a hotel or on a plane, more secure than free WiFi?

Nothing can ever be assumed to be secure. But a paid version would be a better choice if security is a need.

Most hotels I have visited (that offer WIFI) offer the same free WIFI as everywhere else. Never have I paid for WIFI at an hotel.

Sometimes though (at an hotel) you are offered a direct hook up (via a patch cable) ..... but they never tell you what you are paying for (or what you are connecting to) - perhaps you are interfacing to a central computer (located within the confines of the hotel) that is connected to free WIFI....

I do not trust free WIFI at all, unless it is a connection I have set up myself, to my own machine.....

Isn't SSL supposed to assure security over an insecure communication channel?
