When I was a child, we used to go fly model airplanes on weekends where the paratroopers where training during the week. There were little pieces of cordite on the ground all around the place that I collected. I would fill a glass bottle with them, then bury the bottle in the ground with the neck sticking out, throw a burning match inside, and then it would make a very loud whistling sound (my dad taught me how to do this).
