Tiamat - Wings of heaven

One of the bands I'll probably never totally get ; their lyrics have been inspired by Sumerian themes. Since my knowledge of Sumerian society or religion is very limited and I'm unsure where to get better knowledge of it, I'll probably miss out on the meaning of several songs of this band. Good music though.

You know Tiamat? They're not very well-known outside of the metal community...

I did research Sumerian religion and culture a bit on Wikipedia but that's obviously very far away from enough to understand the references to that subject in the music. To truly understand enough of a culture/religion you need intensive studies. I never found a good book or so that deals with Sumerian culture and religion...

Now listening to Alcest - "Oiseaux de proie" (translates as "birds of prey")

Alcest are a French band whose sound can best be described as a very heavy form of shoegaze. Because of harsh metal influences, especially in their early work, the term "blackgaze" (taken from black metal + shoegaze) was created by music journalists to describe their sound. I'm not sure if the band ever embraced that tag or used it themselves. They did say explicitly that they are NOT a black metal band as their music is far less dark and sombre than black metal in their own opinion.

That said, the screams in "Oiseaux de proie" are amongst the darkest and heaviest screams I've heard. I can imagine it'd turn off many people ; as a metal fan though, I find it very appealing, especially because of when they're used. The screams are used only in the part screaming despair lyrically, so it just fits.

Their most famous work to date is probably still "Souvenirs d'un autre monde" (Souvenirs of a different world) ; vocalist Neige had childhood fantasies of a far away fairyland, an "otherworld". He wanted Alcests music to be a soundtrack to that dreamworld. Indeed, some of their music sounds like the soundtrack to a dream.

Now playing: INXS - "Never tear us apart"

One of the greatest love songs ever IMHO. The lyrics are pure poetry, not even rhyme but just ... spot on.

I told you that we could fly
'cause we all have wings
But some of us don't know why

(refering to the power of love very likely)

The video was shot in Prague in 1988, back when the Iron Curtain was still standing.
Having lived in Prague myself 10 years ago, the video fascinates me and adds extra spice to an already fantastic song. I can only imagine how it must have felt like living in Prague before the fall of the Iron Curtain, when the outside world seemed out of reach ; and how it must have felt for the band, traveling to what might have seemed a different world.

Michael Hutchence was a fantastic singer, very charismatic and vocally very gifted (watch some INXS live footage on YouTube). His suicide was such a tragedy (obviously any suicide is a tragedy). The remaining band members should have folded INXS straight after his death instead of trying to go on with other singers. Replacing a singer is tough, replacing an icon close to impossible.

Led Zeppelin are awesome! Some of the best vocals in hard rock/metal. I adore "Kashmir" and "Immigrant song" most within their catalogue, but they got many good tunes!
