Unhappy outlook vs fastmail

A few days ago I opened an Outlook account so I could reply to a newpaper add.
When I went to check my email- inbox was empty. I had about 500 messages.
Now I can't find outlook. I'm not stupid??? Help me please. Janet

Hi Janet,
would love to help but your information is a bit confusing to us.

Did you open a fastmail account?

Outlook is a piece of software, not an email account. Outlook is software that helps you access fastmail, but you can also look at fastmail online without outlook. Outlook should be on your start menu - unless you uninstalled it.

So you can access your fastmail account without outlook by going online to fastmail directly and logging in. Why don't you try that first. go to www.fastmail.fm you won't need outlook to do this.

Here is my guess on what you are reporting:
  • Originally, you used Fastmail only through the web interface.
  • For some reason, you gained the impression that Outlook (or Outlook Express, a different program) could do something important that the Fastmail web interface could not do.
(Am I correct so far?)
  • You set Outlook (or Outlook Express) up to retrieve email from Fastmail using POP rather than the recommended IMAP. This, by default, will move all email from Fastmail's server into your Outlook (or Outlook Express) Inbox on your PC.
If I understand this correctly, and this occurred only recently, the first thing I would do is restore your Fastmail Inbox from the backup. In Fastmail, go to
Options -> Restore from Backup (bottom right option)
and follow the prompts to request a restore of your Inbox
Note carefully: if you find Outlook (or Outlook Express) and want to use it, disconnect from the Internet first. If you do not, you might mess up your Fastmail Inbox again. You should then remove the Outlook (or Outlook Express) account that uses POP and add a new one that uses IMAP.

If you still need help, please let us know the details of what you really are using (OS, Outlook/Outlook Express version, Fastmail account level, any wrong guesses I made above).
