The email address was invented in 1972, and I remember seeing around 1979/1980 the possibility of sending mail between hosts in several universities and research institutes, though I was a teenager and knew no one outside the local host.
I'm quite sure I used email sometime during the 1980's to correspond with my parents (I was a student in Tel Aviv university. They were in sabbatical in some university in the US. Anyone with an account on the mainframe also had an email address of the form account@hostname and there was a list of hosts on the network you could email to if you knew the account of someone on one of those hosts. Anyway I don't have record of any of these emails.
The earliest email I have saved is from 1990. These are the headers:

From: WEIBEL@ZODIAC.BITNET

(No need to worry about the email addresses: they do not exist anymore, and I think the TLD of the sender also doesn't exist anymore).


Also I don't believe the dates in io OP are related to email account creation.
