VK mail SMTP and IMAP

VK (mail.ru) is now offering vk.com mail accounts that work almost exactly like the old mail.ru accounts and since I had an old VK account lying around I decided to try it. Does anyone here have had any luck using an external mail program like Thunderbird to connect the account?

that's the thing, I can use my mail.ru account just fine but haven't been able to do the same with the vk.com account. I use these accounts to test deliverability and having to manually log in to check, is well... less than ideal.

The first time I tried to add it an oauth windows popped up but it said I had to enable oauth tokens. I did the ouath windows popped up again, I authorized thuunderbird but then thunderbird complained about wrong user/pass

I'd just love to help you out some, but I'm afraid I can't. Good luck though.

I will try to get 2FA going and see if that somehow let's me do app passwords or something like that. I think the problem is because it is a newish service, the UI is excatly the same as mail.ru but some security links inside settings (where you would create app passwords in mail.ru) redirect you to VK

The reason for this: @vk.com mailbox does not have a password you can use with IMAP/SMTP client.

You cannot generate application password here https://account.mail.ru/user/2-step-auth/passwords because in order to generate it you must enter regular password. Main VK password is not accepted.
If you find the way to generate application password then IMAP/SMTP access will work.

As I said, @vk.com email accounts do not have password. You can login to them only via vk.com account page (you have to be logged in into your VK account).

Mail.ru Group likes these ugly things: their new ICQ accounts do not have password too. Only phone number + confirmation SMS.

VK has a separated webmail address,

https://vk.mail.ru/inbox/

Also I don't find a location where mail password can be setup.

Login to VK
Open new browser tab
Go to https://account.mail.ru/user/2-step-auth/passwords

The problem is that in order to set application password, you need to enter main (email account) password. But this password does not exist! VK password does not work here.

I am a LONG time user of both mail.ru and VK.com.....and by my knowings it is NOT possible to set up the email from VK.com via Thunderbird or any other email client.(or maybe i am missing something here?) On PC (or laptop) you can sign in directly via VK.com.....or via the special app they have.

Both services still use servers located in Moscow, Russia.
Very reliable....no complaints, even after starting the SMO in Ukraine.

Dutchie.
