cleaning up inbox help

I am getting dangerously close to filling up my allowed space in Fastmail. I have been cleaning up some older and unnecessary emails, but it is still too much. Can you make any suggestions on how to move a couple years' worth of email to my computer and off of FM's servers? Thanks

The easiest ways are:
  1. install any good desktop email client (such as Thunderbird), do normal setup using IMAP, and simply move messages between Fastmail and local folders; or
  2. if you want an archive just in case, but expect to rarely need to refer back to old emails, you may use
    Code:
    Settings->Export->New mail export
    to save messages within a specified date range to a local file on your computer. When necessary, there are various mail clients that are able to open these files.

You can sort mail by size, and get rid of huge messages you don't need. Or delete just attachments and keep the text of the email. A relatively small number of huge messages can take up a big portion of your email quota, and practically all of them are huge because of one attachment that you don't need to keep even if you want to keep the message for reference.
