iI you really want to be independent of a single platform owned by one company/man try the Fediverse (Mastodon).

It's not hard to keep politics out of this.

I've look at it, so far there is only speculation on what X Mail will be.

I think this article lays it out (the speculation) fairly well.

I'm not sure I will be jumping in a X Mail right now. Not enough information available yet. If it offers POP3 and follows email standards (Gmail does not) I might try it.

I don't think I said anything political. Quite the opposite, I said that everyone is entitled to his/her own political opinion, and that goes for Elon Musk too obviously. I did not even express my views on his opinions.

The only thing I said is that I lost my trust in X because of the hate speech, and that for that reason (lack of trust) I don't see why I'd trust email offered by that same platform.

Also, even if I would disregard my lack of trust, @x.com would have been a very neat email domain, but @xmail.com is less interesting in my opinion. The appeal of @x.com was exactly how short and memorable it would have been. One-character .com domain, it would have been very good as a domain.

Nobody accused you or anyone else of political commentary. My comment was a reminder not to get to politics discussion. Please refrain accusing or defending your postings, just discuss the email account in question.

If you go to https://xmail.com/mail/ you see a Roundcube sign in page for webmail.

I wonder if people will just use their Twitter/X handles. Or if they will be able to create what they want. Or, if you create an email ID, it will also create for you an account on X/Twitter (ex-Twitter! )

I doubt I will get this email address. I'm already happy with what I use. I also stopped using Twitter when Elon bought it and set it aflame. I don't have anything against him personally, I just don't like how he destroyed a platform everyone loved, and I wouldn't trust him with my data.

I'm happy with my 20 year old Gmail. I have custom domain with FM and keep Gmail just for family and friends.

Hmmm, interesting question. It would make sense that you're obliged to create an xmail.com account with the same username as your x.com (previously Twitter) account. Otherwise it would lead to great confusion. Very interesting question.

By the way, didn't Facebook once consider creating email accounts too with the same username before the @ as the name of your Facebook profile?

Data concerns for anything related to X are a concern maybe, but I don't know if it would be more of a concern than when using other big email services.

By the way, if you liked Twitter and stopped using it (like me): BlueSky seems a very nice alternative that reminds a lot of the old Twitter in terms of use, interface and how it functions. The only downside is the more complex username (your-personal-choice-of-name.bsky.social as opposed to x.com/your-personal-choice-of-name) but they allow you to replace that longer URL by your own domain which then becomes your BlueSky username.

It's a pity the X-driven email system will be using the xmail.com domain. They don't take advantage of owning a very unique domain, x.com. A one-character .com is so rare that it would have been a great email domain, maybe even tempting people who otherwise don't use X (anymore). But xmail.com doesn't really stand out. Only one character different from Gmail.

Yahoo also tried ymail.com for a while, also never really catched on, so people using Yahoo mostly stuck to yahoo.com for their email.

But in terms of X, they do own x.com which would have been a very powerful domain for email. Unless only selected few people can have an x.com email address (maybe only employees?) it's a pity such potential is wasted.

They might do it to have a huge user base from the start.
It can also serve as a lock-in mechanism: users of X will automatically have an email address that they cannot ignore, since other people would consider it as a legitimate way to contact them. A bit like users of Gmail got all Google services tied to their gmail address (Google doesn't allow users to rename a Google account with a gmail address).

I think Facebook profile name are not unique: several users may have the same name, so they cannot be used as email addresses.
