Namecheap vs Godaddy or other register?
Hi,
what web company do you suggest to use to register a web domain? I have read bad news about godaddy, and some good info about Namecheap, but i'm new about this and i want a reliable company. Suggestion? |

I have used Namecheap for very many years (without problems) If you do a forum search on both these companies there is much historical information.

I would recommend that, whichever registrar you choose, also consider WHOIS privacy for your domain.
Namecheap offers WhoisGuard, but you have to pay extra for that after your initial domain purchase. Gandi and NameSilo - examples of 2 registrars that I use myself - include WHOIS protection at no additional cost, although their prices may be slightly more expensive than Namecheap. That said, I would recommend all the 3 registrars I've mentioned here. |

Name.com is excellent. There are discounts for Who Is privacy frequently available.

I have had domains with Gandi.net for over more than a decade or so. They are excellent. Their support typically answers quickly and are knowledgable. They contribute to multiple open source projects.

I've been using Name.com and United-Domains.de for years, never any problem. United Domains has a German language interface, keep that in mind though. They also require paperwork to be faxed for domain transfers (but I consider that an extra layer of protection rather than a hassle)
I haven't used WHOIS privacy, other than some spam due to spambots finding the email address in the WHOIS databases I haven't any complaints. Deleting the spam takes a few minutes, so far the spam filter of my mailbox has done a good job and the remaining spam that does end in the inbox I've deleted in a few minutes. No complaints PS: for certain ccTLDs it may be best to go with a local registrar. For example, if you need a .es domain, DonDominio are specialised in that. If you need a .be domain, Gandi or bNamed would be good choices. For a .de domain, a German registrar such as United Domains would be good. (this advise excludes those ccTLDs who are branded as if they were gTLDs, such as .tv, .cc, .nu and .co --- as they are often treated as generic TLDs, most famous registrars will offer them at reasonable pricing) |

Namecheap gives you better flexibility IF you want/or need to change your DNS records, etc.
Go Daddy is a major pain when it comes to this issue. Most e-mail services require you to have FULL access to your DNS records IF you want to make changes, etc. David |

It would be interesting to know how good the 'support system' is of all these companies, when their servers are down and your domain name is dead in the water.

I have used GoDaddy only once and it was many years ago, but their support team was hard to reach. Maybe it improved by now, but I'm happy with Name.com Only for ccTLD's I'd maybe go for another option as often ccTLD's are best to be registered with a registrar in the country itself (if you need a .de domain, see if you can find a reliable German registrar, if you need a .uk domain, check if you can find a UK based registrar serving your needs). Of course the likes of Name.com, GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc will have a lot of ccTLD's , but often a bit more pricy. For generic extentions like .com, .net, .info, etc I'm very satisfied with Name.com (PS the pricyness of some country-code extentions is one of the reasons why I haven't purchased a .tv domain yet for my photo website ... Quite expensive compared to a .com domain for example) |
