Well, considering only the free ones I think Gmail is the best, so the results are not so surprising...

from my experience, gmail has the advantages:
  • nice UI, easy operations
  • powerful search
  • rich filters
  • following the email standard, no messages lost
  • no ADs

I think the main reason that most people use Gmail is herd behavior. People that don't have an email account and don't know much about email look around and see that many other people use Gmail, so they figure out it's safe to try it. For people already using an email service with email address it's too much hassle to change providers, so they stay. Many people start using email as children with their parents setting a free account for them, or as teenagers whose main need is to not be different. At that stage practically any email provider is good enough for their email needs. By the time they have more specific needs they are already pretty much tied to their current email address, so they're stuck (and most of them never develop any special email needs).
So I guess that the real reason that Gmail is used much more than other providers is that about 15 to 20 years ago they did offer functionality that the other mainstream providers didn't have yet, and they gained dominance back then. From then on they continued to be dominant because no one else developed anything that is significantly better for the average user.

1. Free with 15GB of storage, which is more than enough for most people for life.
2. Excellent and useful auxiliary apps like Drive, Docs, Sheets, Photos, etc.
3. Here in the USA a significant number of schools use Chromebooks and therefore every kid has a Google account anyway. I've found that many college-age people are unfamiliar with anything except for the Google tools and apps.
4. The best spam filtering in the business.
5. High level of security if you set your account up right. For example, you have the option of using security keys or even a passkey. Lots of email providers don't have these things.
6. Excellent deliverability. Nobody can just block Gmail servers because so many use Gmail.
7. Probably 90% of your friends have a Gmail address here in the USA. It is like Kleenex--a brand name that has come to mean tissues.
8. You can set things up so you see no ads in your Inbox (turn off the promotions category)
9. They don't scan your emails for advertising, despite what many assume.
10. Trusted company. I know some of you don't think so, but companies even as big as Fastmail are unknown quantities for average folks.
