Order Values for Filter Processing

Here is a general guide for the order in which filters are processed:

-99 (Highest Priority)
-98
-97

-2 (Runbox-defined Block Sender Filter)
-1 (Runbox-defined Move Spam Filter)
0 (default Order value for filters if not specified)

X (1st physical entry of Order value X)
X (2nd physical entry of Order value X)

The last three (1000-1002) are shown as if they are rules with these Order values because they seem to behave that way. I don't know if that's how they are really implemented. This is important to know because if you have a filter that moves a message to a folder, it will stop the filter processing for that message and it will never get to the GMS Phone Notification, the Forward To Email/GMSPhone or the Move To Inbox.

Editing an existing filter will not change it's "physical entry" position and therefore will not change it's priority in relation to other filters of the same Order value.

Messages that wind up in the inbox are redirected; others not; what's up with that?

My objective is to filter messages for normal filing into runbox folders. In addition, I'd like EVERY message to be forwarded to another e-mail address. I haven't been able to achieve that. I've succeeded only with messages that wind up in the inbox. Any ideas on how to do it?

If you want to forward these messages to another email address you will have to add your own filter to forward messages that comes ahead of your filters that move messages to folders.

I did puzzle over how those behaviorally-detected priority numbers (1000-1002) would be used in accomplishing what I want. Although I couldn't see how they fit in, what I know is that if I implement a filter that forwards to an e-mail address with a priority higher than other filters that would send the same message to a folder, forwarding occurs without saving to any folder, including the Inbox! If I reverse the priority, then the folder gets it and the forwarded target doesn't receive the message. It is as if once a filter rule is applied for a particular message, processing for that message stops without further action.

From observation, I agree that forwarding from the GSM/forwarding window works as you say: for messages that wind up in the Inbox unfiltered, forwarding takes place. For filtered messages that wind up in some folder other than Inbox, forwarding is suppressed.

The upshot of those findings is that I haven't accomplished what I would like to: forward every incoming message AND then file the message away into some folder or else let it go, free of impinging filters, to the Inbox.

Please refer to the Runbox Help on filters and their actions: http://doc.runbox.com/twiki/bin/view.../Filter#Action

Runbox has two type of filter action that can be used for forwarding a message to another email address: (1) Forward and (2) Redirect.

There actions are as follows:

(1) Forwarded to sends a copy of the email to another email address while retaining the original email and allowing it to pass down to other filters and to the Access level.

(2) Redirected to sends the original email to another email address and does not allow it to pass down to the next filter or the Access level.

Are you using "Redirected to" instead of "Forwarded to"?

I know these filters work because have quite a few filter pairs that first forward a copy of the message to another email address and then store the message into a specific folder.

Good heavens! My apologies! It's all very clear in the wiki as it is in your message. I had been trying redirect I guess from a fragmentary fear then that a FW: might be prefixed to the subject line. Now I believe I'll be able to set up the filter structure that I would like to have. Thank you very much indeed.

Question for example

Just to be sure I get it:

If I set my own filter with an order of "-10" to delete all messages with a header containing "VIAGRA" that will eliminate the messages before "Detect junk mail" can save it to my "Spam1" folder.

Thus leaving my spam1 folder for "Luxury" "watches" and other words that might be in a legitimate message for me.

Correct?

Need to apply a filter to whitelisted sender

Is it possible to insert an order that will apply a filter to whitelisted sender? I have myself whitelisted, and want to keep it that way. But I get some emails that are phishing scams that say they are from me, which of course they are not. The ones that are really troubling me right now have a subject line of, Jezebel message to you, so I created a filter for subject contains "message to you" will be deleted, but it doesn't work.

There should be no issues when deleting the message at say order -30.

But the main issue here is that you have whitelisted your own address? The best thing would be to not whitelist yourself.

Thanks for the reply Kim. I need to have myself whitelisted for my work, many emails are copied to me. So, if I go to that filter that I've already created, and change the order to -30, you think that will work?

Eric,

I've had a think about this, but I am not sure if this will work. It might be worth giving it a go though.

* Remove yourself from the whitelist.
* Create 2 filters at around position -30
* These filters should be:
- 30 a filter to delete the emails you wish to delete
- 29 a filter to move all emails addressed to you from you to the inbox

The order of the filters is important as the troublesome ones must be deleted before others are moved to the inbox.

If that works then all emails addressed to you should either be deleted or moved to the inbox before the spam filter sees them.

Let us know if that works.

Could you instead delete based on the word: "Jezebel"? Thats not a common word you will see in lots of other emails.

To get around the self-whitelist problem, create an alias of yourself.
eg:

if you're email address is username@runbox.com, create the alias username.private@runbox.com and send all your self-referencing mail to that (and never share that email address!)
