Anyone run into Hotmail/Outlook demands to re-confirm linking email?

Every few months, when I'm logging in, there's a pop-up asking me to re-confirm yet again, the alternative email I gave them as a link. This is a problem, because the alternative is usually something I don't use, and half the time it's a chore to track down the password or, worse, re-constitute the account.

Hotmail/Outlook gives you two choices with the pop-up, something like:
- Looks good!
- No, I don't have that anymore.

In the past, when I click "Looks good!" seems to me that's always been the end. They don't ask further. But now I'm stuck with something where I really can't access the linked account - so I'm wondering if anyone ever clicked to admit they don't have the old one at all anymore. Or do they just say, Okay, what would you like to give us instead?

Personally, I would want my alternative email address to be one I use and can easily log into. I have experienced situations where I would have lost the main account if I couldn't get a link or code at the recovery email address. It is easy to think it will never happen to you, but it has happened to many of us!

It's perfectly easy to log into. It's just that the password I noted down doesn't seem to be the right one.

I'm guessing what happened is that I opened it having chosen a name and password, but then in the process discovered that they had requirements that my password choice didn't fit, so I changed it at the last minute - probably scribbled it down, but can't find it.

Amazingly, although I've even asked in a forum specifically for Hotmail/Outlook, it's as if this never happened to anyone else on the planet.
