Gmail from:XXX. bug
Given the (albeit incomplete) docs here:

Interesting.
Searching for from:john.smith also returns email from johnsmith@ (no dot). I wonder if this has something to do with being able to put the dot anywhere to the left of the @ in a GMail address. Messages sent to john.smith@gmail.com and johnsmith@gmail.com both go to the same GMail mailbox. |

The search from:joh.nsmith doesn't return anything, so the dot is not a wildcard.
