Unless you are at one of the two poles, it's EASY to go to the east indefinitely!

That depends on how you BASE your direction of travel. Traveling in what appears to be a locally straight line will return you to your starting point. But if you start anywhere on the globe (except for either pole) and head northeast using a constantly updated 45 degree heading at a constant ground speed, you will spiral toward the north pole. While you are north of the equator, you will spiral faster and faster until you are rapidly spinning at the north pole!
