posting a search
As noted elsewhere, if you do a search and post the url from the address bar, the url will not be valid after a week.
Expanding on Daniel S's post here are the parameters for constructing a search url by hand. =================================================== http://www.emaildiscussions.com/search.php?action=simplesearch &query= &searchuser= &exactname= &forumchoice= &titleonly= &showposts= &searchdate= &beforeafter= &sortby= &sortorder= =================================================== &query= the search string joined with "+"s --------------------------------------------------- &searchuser= the username &exactname= "yes" = Match exact name "no" = Match partial name --------------------------------------------------- &forumchoice= "-1" = Search All Open Forums "3" = Discussions about Email Services "6" = -- Early Warning... "7" = -- Email Help Needed! "8" = -- Email Comments, Questions and Miscellanea "15" = -- The Technical Zone... "9" = -- Setting up/running an email service "16" = Email Service Provider-specific Forums "18" = -- Runbox Forum "27" = -- FastMail.FM Forums "17" = ---- FastMail.FM General Discussions "28" = ---- Fastmail.FM Help and Current Issues "29" = ---- Fastmail.FM Feature Requests "30" = -- Google Gmail Forum "5" = Miscellaneous "23" = -- The Off-Topic Lounge "12" = -- About this site... &titleonly= "" = Search entire posts "yes" = Search titles only &showposts= "1" = Show results as posts "" = Show results as thread --------------------------------------------------- &searchdate= "-1" = any date "1" = yesterday "5" = a week ago "10" = 2 weeks ago "30" = a month ago "90" = 3 months ago "180" = 6 months ago "365" = a year ago This parameter seems to be mandatory &beforeafter= "after" = and newer "before" = and older --------------------------------------------------- &sortby= "title" = title "replies" = number of replies "views" = number of views "lastpost" = last posting date "poster" = poster "forum" = forum &sortorder= "ascending" = in ascending order "descending" = in descending order =================================================== So for example, to find all threads that I have posted to in The Technical Zone forum ... http://www.emaildiscussions.com/search.php?action=simplesearch &searchuser=cybersmurf &forumchoice=15 &searchdate=-1 put all the text on one line ... ..&searchuser=cybersmurf&forumchoice=15&searchdate=-1 [Addendum:] Some parameters have changed with the new version of vBulletin. http://www.emaildiscussions.com/showpost.php?p=412887 Last edited by CyberSmurf : 5 Mar 2007 at 10:25 AM. If you are not trying to post a search** from within EmailDiscussions.com, which was the reason for my previous tip, members might find that a search engine, like Google, is better for searching for phrases like "that is one option".
It wouldn't be possible to replicate the example from my previous post within Google. ** As mentioned in the thread that I quoted in my previous post, the "searchid" parameter expires, so you can't just copy the url of a search that you have done. [edit 2006-Nov-20] Update "site" parameter in Google url ("that is one option"). [edit 2007-Feb-26] Remove " " code from link text. Current version of vBulletin does not support non-breaking space. post-vBulletin-upgrade
Some of the preceding tips may be unnecessary, or may not work, after EMD has upgraded to the version of vBulletin.

Searching only seems to return 500 results.
If you are looking for the oldest post you should sort by "ascending". |

posting a search
When you want to post as search, it can be problematic because the search number expires quickly.
You can search this site using an off-site search engine, and post the link from your browser. eg. "search this site". When searching for a phrase this may actually be preferable to using EMD's search. If you wish to post a search for posts by a specific user there are a couple of handy links in the user profile which you can right-click and copy. ---------------------------- Or, if you wish to post a specific search from within EMD you will have to construct the search url by hand. http://www.emaildiscussions.com/search.php?do=process (go straight to the results) http://www.emaildiscussions.com/search.php? (show the search form) &query= Code:
Search by Key Word &query= xxxxxx keywords joined with "+" &titleonly= "0" = Search Entire Posts "1" = Search Titles Only ---------------------------- Search by User Name &searchuser= xxxxxx &starteronly= "0" = Find Posts by User "1" = Find Threads Started by User &exactname= "1" = yes ---------------------------- Find Threads with &replyless= "0" = At Least "1" = At Most &replylimit= xxx ---------------------------- Find Posts from &searchdate= "0" = Any Date "lastvisit" = Your Last Visit "1" = Yesterday "7" = A Week Ago "14" = 2 Weeks Ago "30" = A Month Ago "90" = 3 Months Ago "180" = 6 Months Ago "365" = A Year Ago &beforeafter= "after" = and Newer "before" = and Older ---------------------------- Sort Results by &sortby= "rank" = Relevancy "title" = Title "replycount" = Number of Replies "views" = Number of Views "threadstart" = Thread Start Date "lastpost" = Last Posting Date "postusername" = User Name "forum" = Forum &order= "descending" = in Descending Order "ascending" = in Ascending Order ---------------------------- Show Results as &showposts= "0" = Threads "1" = Posts ---------------------------- Search in Forum(s) &forumchoice[]= "0" = Search All Open Forums "subscribed" = Search Subscribed Forums "3" = Discussions about Email Services "6" = Early Warning... "7" = Email Help Needed! "8" = Email Comments, Questions and Miscellanea "15" = The Technical Zone... "9" = Setting up/running an email service "16" = Email Service Provider-specific Forums "18" = Runbox Forum "27" = FastMail.FM Forums "17" = FastMail.FM General Discussions "28" = Fastmail.FM Help and Current Issues "29" = Fastmail.FM Feature Requests "30" = Google Gmail Forum "5" = Miscellaneous "23" = The Off-Topic Lounge "12" = About this site... &childforums= "1" = yes Last edited by CyberSmurf : 5 Mar 2007 at 10:30 AM. |

For the current version of vBulletin, the equivalent is to click on the post number at the top right of the post.

The vB Code page has some useful codes which even some long-term members (such as me) may not be aware of. For a start, there's the useful "noparse" container to include vbCode examples without them being interpreted.
For linking threads there's the [thread] container; for instance, to link to this thread -- Long way: [url]http://www.emaildiscussions.com/showthread.php?t=24768[/url] or [url=http://www.emaildiscussions.com/showthread.php?t=24768]Hi![/url] Short way: [thread]24768[/thread] or [thread=24768]Hi![/thread] To link to the first post of this thread -- Long way: [url]http://www.emaildiscussions.com/showpost.php?p=234494&postcount=1[/url] or [url=http://www.emaildiscussions.com/showpost.php?p=234494&postcount=1]Hi![/url] Short way: [post]234494[/post] or [post=234494]Hi![/post] There are other facilities which some might find useful, such as the ability to have Roman-numbered lists. Note however that the "img" tag doesn't work, and the "attach" tag probably doesn't either. |
