Sending and receiving reliability

Lately (past year or so) I have encountered more and more failed email sends and/or receipts from various services. Typically, this has been when sending from one of my domains using various services. I'll double-check with the recipient, often via phone but sometimes via Gmail, and they report not having received the email. Sometimes it is located in their spam folder. This has also happened using smaller email providers like Onmail and some of the email forwarding services, like Duck Duck Go (they have a reply and send feature). I can't detect any particular pattern since it is relatively rare. However, it has happened with a few important emails, making me wary of using anything except for Gmail for mission-critical stuff. I suspect it may be related to email services tightening up their spam and junk filters due to the overwhelming number of fraudulent emails going around. Is it getting to the point that only Gmail is a reliable service for sending email?

I've always used Fastmail with my own domains (.cc, .uk. .xyz). Except when there have been reported issues, an email has never knowingly failed to be sent or received. They might rarely go into my Spam folder or that of the recipient.

I follow Fastmail on Twitter and they have had a lot of reported issues lately. Emails being delayed can be just as bad as not going through at all, in some cases. For example, some services I use insist on sending a confirmation code to my email before I can log in.

I haven't noticed any one the receiving end. On sending, notably to hotmail.com accounts.

OP, you are so elegant, wise, intelligent, and sagacious that my admiration for you is like an unstoppable river, impossible to contain. You've discovered a truth that I had long ago verified.

As evidence, please see my following post.

Great minds think alike! What prompted my post was an email I sent the other day with a 7-page contract attached. After a few days I still had not heard back from the party and I was thinking to myself, "I'd better send them a Gmail to see if they received the contract." Then I though of several times in the past when this same thing occurred with important emails.
