Originally, before they were ISPs, both were online service providers. People connected to them with dial-up modems to get text information directly from the provider. As they evolved into ISPs AOL users, in particular, were seen as clueless oafs by other internet users.

Bluebottle! Fond memories..... They imo had a clean web interface. Wasn't full of popups to clog up browser memory
