How can I get a count of the selected messages...
... non-destructively?
Setting e.g. Important just to get the count in the result pop-up is destructive. EDIT: And with Conversation view on, counts conversations not messages. I need this for debugging sync between FM and Gmail... the hard way EDIT: using Conversation view off) Thanks. Last edited by chrisjj : 5 Nov 2024 at 07:30 PM. |

I suspect you already know this, but you can turn off that Important label if you want to (I turned mine off) at Settings/Inbox/Importance Markers. I find this type of filtering just adds to my work by marking things as important that shouldn't be and not marking things that are important. I prefer my emails to be ordered by their arrival time, period.

Sorry if I was unclear, but what I mentioned was the Important command not the label ("marker" in Gmail parlance), and then only as a mechanism to get a display of the selected message count.
Thanks for your suggestion of hiding the marker. Whilst that marker remains implicated in my date order muddle issue http://www.emaildiscussions.com/showthread.php?t=80705 , I think I'll retain it as a warning. I take your "I prefer my emails to be ordered by their arrival time" to suggest that Important marker display interferes with that. Here, it does not. Nor does the Importance marker state, displayed or not. Last edited by chrisjj : 5 Nov 2024 at 07:25 PM. |

Probably not what you want, but you could assign a temporary label.
When you go to that label (folder) you will get a count of messages. |

Thanks. That is indeed non-destructive.
And you don't need to go to the label. You get the count on the pop-up acknowledgement - if the count is greater than 1. Note though with Conversation view ON, the count is of the number of conversations not messages. |
