is there a fastmail api?

I was wondering if there is an api which i can use to check the amount of unread mail. If so I might create a simple notification extension for chrome.

Welcome to the forum!

In answer to your question, sort of. There is an old SOAP API that kind of works called the FastServices API. See https://blog.fastmail.com/2005/01/27...tservices-api/. Documentation, such as it is, is archived at https://web.archive.org/web/20070822...p/FastServices.

If you want to try to use it, prepare for a lot of frustration. For a start, the documentation is incomplete and outdated. It does still kind of work though. A tool called FastCheck uses it.

For now, if it was me and I was determined to bother, I would try to put something together based on IMAP IDLE.

Most likely (not talked about by Fastmail) within a year or two, there will be something better. Fastmail's backend is well along in moving to a new standard they are pushing called JMAP. See http://jmap.io/. I have looked at the specification, and it seems very sound. I think writing your own programs for limited query of the Fastmail server will be quite feasible.
