CyberSmurf, very interesting you mention that you are able to use your old ISP email.
Here in Sweden they are so "stingy" or non-generous that if you don't pay them then your old account is gone. One exception is Spray.se but they realized that it is better to have very many looking at the ads even if they are not subscribers to ADSL and such accounts so they created a free email service but the support for it was so poor that many abandon using it. Sure I use my ISP email too but it is not one of my five most used. I used gmx very much for many months??? and then something did happen that made me lose trust in it. Maybe I am unfair. I also tried to get a habit for using lavabit and AOL or AIM rather but something about their log in was not appealing. They had only IMAP at that time and pop3 lagged for a year or so? So I lost a feeling for using it. I used Safe-mail a lot for a long time and then lost interest in it. Hotmail I use for those email lists and forums that have many hotmail users. Yahoo in the y7mail variety I use on yahoogroups. Gmail I use for forums that I plan to stay on for long. Fastmail is more like a nostalgic relation. I joined EMD with a rather crazy user name. FMNewbie or similar name. I had read about them in a Swedish computer mag and wanted to join their forum. So it was love at first sight or something but typical for me I totally failed to set up my mail client Opera for Fastmail IMAP cause I am a total computer noob dimwit or what the proper word is. I always fail using computers. Even on easy things. So I had to give up on using IMAP. I log in once a month to keep a Guest account at FM. Hotpop was one of the worst email service ever tested by me. Took me years to come down to three main providers. I used to have over 20 services active at a time but always forgot my passwords and even usernames and the secret question and so on. So happy now that I am down to three main services. Mjolnir, "I really don't get very much email" We should not tease you for being unlucky to have chosen some of those email services. One trust the bragging texts they have and later one just have given out the addresses to everybody and to change demands some motivation. But I would drop hotpop if I where you. Not reliable service. Same here about getting few emails. I almost never get email .What I get is forums telling me that the threads that I am active in have had new posts in them. But I get such from 10 to 50 a day so I need only one service but I prefer to have three and two reserves. |

Although I only have to login to my "member" account at FM once every six months, I think, to keep it active, which I have no problem doing adequately often for my occasional use of it, as my account also only has IMAP and not POP3, just as a "FYI", I also have an inbox.lv account set to automatically poll my fastmail account by IMAP on a regular basis, and I believe IMAP checking is adequate to keep a fastmail account "active". And my inbox.lv accounts have thus far never been deactivated no matter how rarely I log into them. So you could try setting that up as a little "insurance" against forgetting to login to your Fastmail account every 30 days.
(And also, inbox.lv has an autoforwarding option as well, so presumably you could have any messages collected from your fastmail inbox autoforwarded elsewhere from there as they're collected.) |

I'm surprised no one has mentioned mail through their webhost.
I don't have all my domains hosted on Gmail apps, just a few, but most of my day is spent between web host mail and Gmail. I do use AOL/AIM/Tunome as very useful backup accounts, which I do use via webmail. Beyond that, I check well over 100 other addresses everyday, either through Magic Mail Monitor, or though POP3 collection in Gmail. 1) Hosted Mail 2) Gmail / Gmail Apps 3) AOL/AIM/Tunome 4) Maybe GMX or Yahoo. 5) Maybe Live.com/Hotmail I'm most never into the webmail in the last two, though (FYI I have a client whose dialup ISP e-mail was just canceled last month, about five years after she moved to broadband in 2004. Odd, but it happened.) |

Looking through the messages stored in my e-mail client I'd have to say my top five, in no particular order are:
1) ISP 2) Gmail 3) Hotmail 2 4) Bluehome 5) EuMX I use all of my accounts to some degree but those are the busiest ones. I have one Yahoo account that would be in that list if I turned on daily messages in selected Yahoo! Groups. |

Well nearly all my email goes through my own hosted domain,, I have use of Eumx etc but this normally for backup purposes, as the server I use for my main email is so reliable.

I have an ADSL, but without static IP address, it gives me dynamic IP only.
If l can get a static IP I will setup an email server by myself, postfix + clamv + spamassassin + webmail will do the best comparing to all free providers, ![]() |

dynamic ip is not suggested or even is prohibited to be used as a MTA.
there are many RBL lists on the world who list all kinds of dynamic IPs as blacklists, like dslbl, sorbs, njabl etc they all have dynamic IP blacklists IIRC. AOL, earthlink and many others reject the mssages from a MTA with dynamic IP. |

Are there alternatives to inbox.lv that could do the same thing? |

Myrealbox has (or at least had) external IMAP pollng, and in fact I believe I did use it to poll my Fastmail account for awhile several years ago. But I found even then that the polling seemed to "go to sleep" after awhile, working on a very erratic basis. Ad I believe it may also have had a tendency to re-download the same messages repeatedly, leaving duplicates of same in my MRB account. And from what I have read here, MRB has become less reliable of late (while I still have 2 or 3 MRB accounts, I only poll them by POP3 "passively" from a little-used Gmail account and never really use them for anything anymore), and I don't believe they're taking new signups, and of course their 10MB storage capacity is pretty minuscule by modern standards. Gawab.com and Laposte.net both purport to have IMAP retrieval, but the latter doesn't have an English interface, and neither seemed to work well or consistently when I tried them. Bluehome.net can do it, for anyone who already has a Bluehome account, since they haven't taken new signups for quite awhile now. But, while I'm not sure, I believe Bluehome may not be able to leave a copy of the messages on the server when polling by IMAP, and I believe the minimum polling interval may be hourly. While hourly polling is more than adequate for me, I prefer to leave a copy of messages in my Fastmail inbox, deleting them manually when I want to. While there may be others, those are the only ones I can think of at the moment. By comparison, at least thus far, Inbox.lv's polling has seemed consistent, with polling about every ten minutes (or at least so they say), and unlike Laposte.net it has an English interface, which also seems faster and less cluttered to me than Laposte's (although I do use Firefox with Adblock Plus, which may be a factor in that). And it has one of the largest storage capacities of any free services, at 10GB, which my account is still currently using "0%" of. So, while it isn't the only free service with such capability, thus far it seems to me to be the best for the purpose of those I've tried. The only drawback to it which I can think of offhand which I've noticed thus far is that I haven't been able to find a way to use it to poll more than one external POP3 or IMAP account. But then, I guess one shouldn't expect to get "everything" for free. Last edited by xmailer : 13 Aug 2009 at 06:30 AM. |

Interesting, but very few write about Inbox.lv so I had it not present in my mind until you told me about it. I take a look, thanks for telling me.

As far as I've noticed, no Latvian services seem to get discussed much here. But then, I can't say with absolute certainty that there even are any other free Latvian email services, although I would think it might be likely that there are. But this one could be the largest such, for all I know.
